105.9 “The X” in Pittsburgh made a deal with the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team to offer their HD2 bandwidth for a 24/7 Pittsburgh Penguins channel.
As the team’s flagship station, it made sense for WXDX to super serve their listeners in this manner and gave the Penguins a chance to “own” the coverage of the team. But it also presented a chance for both the station and the team to make money. 105.9-HD2 is Pittsburgh Penguins Radio and has been on the air since October 1, 2009 and before the channel hit the airwaves officially, the Penguins had gathered up a number of sponsors who were willing to jump on board. Forward thinking sponsors like Geico, Qdoba, California University of PA, and Mountaineer Casino are all involved in sponsorship of 105.9-HD2 as part of their commitment to the Penguins. WXDX also supports the effort by including promotion of the channel on their website and on-air on all of the Clear Channel Pittsburgh stations. The station also has the ability to sell sponsors during the 1-hour program hosted daily by their very own afternoon host Mark Madden.
